So folks, this is what I drove 600 miles for. For those of you around the country not lucky enough to have weather amenable to seeing this astronomical wonder, I hope you enjoy the following time-lapse video of the ‘little comet that could’.
Despite the crescent moon being more than 10 degrees above Comet Pan-STARRS (compared to last night), the air cleared quite nicely and gave us quite a treat. At 2008 hrs. last night, the comet emerged from a mid-level cloud, and descended to the horizon at 2027 hrs. in a fiery ball. Tonight the tail was even naked-eye visible, despite the decreasing brightness forecast of magnitude 2.1. Images were captured with a tripod-mounted Canon 5D MkIII, EF70-200/2.8L IS + EF 1.4x TCII; various exposures and ISOs.
